A cautious re-start to bowling at Madeira....

A message from our General Secretary....

We wish to inform you of the club’s attempt to start moving forward towards normality. We will be opening the greens for play on Monday 15th June.

As the government keeps saying, these are cautious first steps and we will review this initial attempt after 10 days (Thursday June 25th) so please be patient if there are hiccups. Madeira Bowls Club will work in accordance with current Government guidelines and advice from Bowls England. We will review our arrangements and take on board any new Government Guidance on the 25th June so any bookings made after this date will be subject to a satisfactory review and a Management Committee agreement to continue with the partial opening.

1. The greens will be opening on 15th June. The sessions will be between 11.30am - 7.45pm

2. No one can just turn up to play. The booking system is via Jacky Howle who will organise bookings and allocate rinks. Members may phone her (01395 222337) on a Monday and Thursday morning between 9.30 - 11.00 to make a booking.  Members are asked not to ring at other times. Bookings can be made from Monday 7th June

3. The two greens will operate at slightly different times so there is not a large group of people arriving and leaving together.

Green 1 (Rks 1, 3 & 5)

11.30am - 1.00

1.30 - 3.00

3.30 - 5.00

6.00 - 7.30

Green 2 (Rks 7, 9 & 11)

11.45am - 1.15

1.45 - 3.15

3.45 - 5.15

6.15 - 7.45

Within that 1.5 hours, players must arrive, sanitise, bowl, sanitise (again) and leave the premises. You must be on the premises for that hour and half as a maximum. Please do not come early.

4. There is absolutely no car parking available at the bowls or cricket club. Players must make their own car parking arrangements at the EDDC Queens Road car park or on nearby roads.

5. Entry will be via the side gate which will have a combination lock with the code being the same as the clubhouse door.

6. Equipment will be in or near the tournament office. There will be a key box on the wall near to this office with the code being the same as the clubhouse door and the side gate. The key inside the box will get you into the tournament office if the door is locked. Please put the key back after use.

Players in the final session of the day have responsibility for putting equipment into the Tournament Office, locking up that office, replacing the key in the key box and putting the combination lock on the gate

7. At present, you can only play singles (see BE guidance sheet). Please ensure that you play only on your allocated rink. Please take one mat and two jacks per rink. Scoreboards, pushers and ditch markers are not available. Sanitise the mat and collect the jack out of the bucket which has added disinfectant. All equipment to be returned at the end of the session. Sanitise the mat and put the jack back in the bucket. Then sanitise or wash your hands (outside cold tap is available) and leave the premises promptly before others arrive. We will provide sanitiser and wipes but feel free to bring your own if you wish. Please take litter home.

8. Strictly no visitors or spectators to be on the premises.

9. There is no entry into the clubhouse and toilets are not available.

The clubhouse will be open for members to collect bowls / shoes and other equipment from lockers on Friday 12th June between 10.00am - Noon and Saturday 13th June, also 10.00am - Noon. This will be only to collect equipment from lockers and will be one person in each changing room at any one time.

We apologise that all this sounds very regimented and formal but to open we have to ensure that we are keeping all members safe. Management will close the greens if regulations are not adhered to as members’ safety is paramount. We appreciate that some members cannot wait to play bowls again whilst others will choose not to. There will be no charge for those who want to play; you must just have paid your £25 membership fee to David Tucker.

As already stated, we will review our arrangements and take on board any new Government Guidance on the 25th June so any bookings made after this date will be subject to a satisfactory review and a Management Committee agreement to continue with the partial opening.

This is the Player’s Guidance Sheet from Bowls England:

Covid -19: Supplementary guidance for lawn Bowls Clubs

Approved by Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) - May 14th 2020

Players - Summary of Recommended Actions.

Bowls England recommends that all players follow the guidance below (the guidance may be adapted if necessary, to meet individual needs, so long as they remain consistent with Government advice and social distancing requirements):

In Advance

  • Do not go to the club if you are experiencing any coronavirus (Covid-19) symptoms or any cold or flu- like symptoms, in particular a cough or a high temperature. Use the NHS 111 website or helpline and seek advice. For your own protection, follow the advice about self-isolation if you are, or are living with, someone in one of the vulnerable groups.
  • Dress appropriately before you get to the club to avoid the need to change clothes - change shoes immediately before and after your game.
  • Travel to the green on your own or with a member of your own household only - do not offer a lift to, or accept a lift from, anyone outside your household. Do not arrive more than 10 minutes before your allocated booking time.

Personal care

  • Whilst they may be open, avoid using toilets at the club wherever possible
  • Avoid licking fingers or touching your face with your hands
  • Clean anything you have touched after use
  • Take any food or drink you might need with you
  • Wash or sanitise your hands and sanitise any equipment (including bowls, jacks and mats) you use before and after you play - do not assume that the person before you has sanitised the equipment thoroughly
  • Sanitise padlocks, keys and door handles, before and after use

Playing the game

  • You should only play -
  • by yourself
  • with people from your own household
  • with one other person from outside your household as long as you stay two metres apart
  • Groups of more than two people must all be from the same household. This means you cannot have two or three people from the same household plus one person from outside the household playing together
  • Do not shake hands before, during or after the game
  • Do not ‘high-five’ OR ‘hug’ other players to celebrate shots or a win
  • Only one player should handle the mat during the session
  • Two jacks (one at each end) should be used and these should be set by one player only throughout the session
  • If scoring
      • Social distancing rules must be strictly adhered to at all times
      • Do not touch your opponent’s bowls with your hands
      • Avoid measuring for shots

When you leave

  • When you finish playing, change your shoes and leave the club immediately - ensuring that you have sanitised all equipment used and that the club is secure (as applicable)
