Lawn green bowling has been an integral part of the sporting activities of Exmouth since the late 19th Century. Madeira Bowling Club was founded in 1926, with a Ladies’ Section following in 1934. An existing Victorian wooden structure, known as ‘The Octagon’, was adopted as the initial clubhouse, a purpose for which it served until as recently as 2003, when concerns for its structural soundness necessitated its replacement. Combining the new extension with the existing dining area has resulted in the ‘Magnolia Room’, which is of sufficient size to house all our social functions.
Throughout the history of the club, there has been a succession of improvements to the facilities provided to the members. A second green was laid in 1930. A three rink indoor hall was built and opened in 1981, thus providing an all-year bowling facility. Additionally, a bar, home and visitor changing rooms, a machinery room, a bowling equipment store room, a tournament office and a greenkeeper’s mess room have also been provided.
Today, Madeira is one of the largest bowling clubs in Devon, having a total membership in excess of 300, and is widely known for its excellent bowling surfaces.
A maximum of 14 outdoor rinks and 3 indoor rinks are available.
This year 46 touring sides are visiting the club. Adding these matches to national, county and internal club competitions, together with friendly fixtures with local clubs, makes for a very full calendar throughout the outdoor season. Needless to say, with three rinks the indoor season sees the same level of activity
